Points to be consider while doing link exchange

June 26th, 2008 by lalita negi

Link Building is a process of getting quality websites link to your website, in order to improve your link popularity or the page rank. Also term as back links. As every seo/webmaster know that the getting more links from other sites pointed to your website, it will help you to get higher rankings in search engines such as Google - but not all links are created equal.

Before giving links to the other website or doing link exchange, you should consider the few points
  1. Relevancy : Link Exchange with the website who is similar to your business. Eg if you have mobile related website, link exchange with the website offering mobile accessories, mobile phone, mobile ring tone etc.
  2. Page Rank : Check the page rank of the website, home page and the page where your link is added.
  3. Cached : Check whether the page where your link is place is cached or not.
  4. Cached Date : Check the date when google has crowled the web page.
  5. Cached Text : If the page is cached, check the cached text and compare with the present visible text. Do this step to know is google is caching text or not.
  6. No of links : Count how many links are already present in the given web page where your link is added. If the web page have more that 25 - 30 links dont reciprocate with that website.
  7. Containing Relevant Link : Check the linke page consisting of relevant links. If it containg different subject link, dont reciprocate.
  8. Two Clicks Away : The page where you r getting links should not be 2 click away from the home page.
  9. Linked from home page : The page should be linked from home page. It should not be an orphan page.
  10. Do Not Reciprocate with the banned website : Check website is it banned by google or not.
  11. Relevant Category : Check your link is present in the relevant category in the resouce page.
  12. Do Not have linked with the spam website : While doing 3 way link exchage other webmaster give links from the website which is used only for link exchange and contains only link not giving the services. Dont link exchange with these website.
  13. Link Exchange with the website which is offering Services.
If you follow above points you will get quality of links. I know that it is very difficult to analyse but if you follow your site will be on the top of every search engine.

Videos on your blog

June 26th, 2008 by Melody

If you like putting videos on your blog, you might be interested in this feature. Adsense some time ago introduced a feature called video units that will enable its users to embed a YouTube video on one’s blog and then make money from ads being displayed together with the videos.

If the videos you put are relevant to the topic of your blog, this attractive feature will surely enrich its quality and add some new, positive aspect to it. You can be always sure that the ads displayed will be relevant to the topic of your video (and blog) and non-intrusive. Additionally you will be able to blend your YouTube videos into your blog by customizing the color and layout as well as choosing from three different player sizes.

A Freaking DOS Attack

June 25th, 2008 by John Cow

So many of our faithful readers probably noticed that JohnCow was down all day on June 24th 2008.

Want to know why?

A freaking DOS Attack!

Here’s what happened. We came into the office yesterday and started our day and the first thing we noticed was that our website was down. So what did we do? We called our hosting company who then told us that we were hit by a DoS attack and hopefully our website should be up soon. Well our website came back up, at 5pm…. It was down our whole day.

Are you all familiar with what a DoS attack is?

Or actually another name for it is called ‘Denial-of-Service’ Attack. See what happens when this type of attack happens on a website is when somebody is constantly pinging the website over and over and over again. What this will then do is consume resources to the point that our website is shut down like it was all day yesterday. Our hosting provider (Liquid Web) had to reroute the IP that was getting hit, until the attack stops. This one was behind the MCI network and it took a few hours for MCI to take action.

Now normally these types of attacks generally happen to high-profile websites (We feel so Honored! Okay, not so much.), such websites as let’s say Banks or a website that will take credit card payments are often targets. It also appears that the attack was pointed towards a bunch of sites on sitepoint marketplace and since our Video Game Reviews blog from the COWpetition is on the same IP as JohnCow.. well we suffered. (Yes we are addressing this ) )

Now these DoS attacks are actually considered violations of: Laws of individual nations and IAB’s Internet proper use policy.

We thought we would look more into these DoS attacks and see what other websites had been crippled by them this year.

Well on May 29th 2008 – Revision3 posted about how their servers were crippled on Memorial Day weeks by DoS attacks. You can read all about their attack here:

http://revision3.com/blog/2008/05/29/inside-the-attack-that-crippled-revision3/

We also came across another post, here:

http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/04/23/slideshare-slammed-with-ddos-attacks-from-china/

That talks about how SlideShare was crippled by DoS attacks just one day before CNN was also crippled by a DOS attack http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/04/18/cnn.websites/. Now this roughly happened around April 18th 2008.

How about a DoS attack that was set up to cripple the Church of Scientology but instead began to target a school in the Netherlands. http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/01/anonymous-hacke.html

So if these attacks are violations, then what’s being done to prevent them?

There is a company out there called ‘Prolexic‘ that is available to help protect websites from these DoS attacks. Wondering how they work? Pretty simple actually, well when a website/server is being attacked they will actually substitue one of their servers.

But what about the actual people? Are we able to find these people who are actually doing the attacks and brand their behinds to teach them a lesson? Well chances are most of these guys are sitting in their parents basement with comic books stacked to the ceiling and have rerouted and cloaked themselves so well that it would be next to impossible to find them.

So the question to them is… imagine what you could accomplish if you actually spent that time doing something to generate income?

Have you ever had a DoS attack?

Keyword Research - Shiny Diamonds Everywhere

June 25th, 2008 by John Cow

This post is a continuation of the Keyword Research lesson “Start Up the Diamond Digger

Now that AffiliateElite has ran for 14 days, we are ready to get our good “Money” keywords. Once we have these words we are then going to need to decide which words we are going to focus on for affiliate presales content and which ones will be for regular content posts.

Part 1 Filter Our the Good Words

Step 1: Open AffiliateElite and select “Analyze Adwords Competition” and click “OK”

Step 2: Select the campaign from the drop down menu that you want to get the keywords from.

Step 3: Click the “Report” tab.

Step 4: In the “Report” section, right click in the table and select the “Expand All”

Step 5: Click the “TD Ratio” twice to sort from highest to lowest of percentage found

Step 6: Click the “Export” button and then save as a Excel CSV file.

Step 7: The export CSV now needs to be edited to see the best keywords. To do this delete all the columns except “Keywords”, “Total Days Found” and “Total Days Found (%)”

Step 8: Now highlight the three columns and click in the menu “Data” –> “Sort” and then sort by “Total Days Found” and “Total Days Found (%)”

Step 9: Now you can delete all the keywords that were not found atleast 85% of the time. Now copy those keywords and save them in a notepad file (.txt)

You now have a list of keywords that you know have a very good chance of being profitable because they are keywords that advertisers have consistently been spending money on. The challenge now is to figure out which of these words are good from an organic search engine stand point.

This is where we use the Traffic Estimator tool from your Google Adwords account.

Part 2 Finding the Organic Treasures

Step 1: Log into your Adwords account, go to the “tools” section and then “Traffic Estimator”

Step 2: Enter the keywords from the .txt file you created from AffiliateElite and (1) enter them into the top box 1, (2) Enter a Max CPC of 100 and (3) select “all countries and territories” and add. Now click on “Continue”

Step 3: Google will now give you details of each of the keywords. It is important to remember that this data is related to Google Adwords and that means that the traffic estimates are lower then what you might expect from organic search engine listings.

Now you are going to click on the link “Estimated Clicks / Day” and this will sort the data from highest traffic to lowest.

Step 4: Next you are going to start searching for the best words to use for content on your blog. Do NOT use single word phrases, you will have better chances with larger phrases such as three word phrases because these tend to have lower competition. Start at the top of your list and work your way down and what you are going to do is take the keyword phrase and enter it into google search using the allintitle search command…

Allintitle:“keyword phrase here”

You are going to want to find the keywords that have decent traffic and low competition and as a general rule if the allintitle results are…

  • Less than 10 000 results = OK
  • Less than 5000 results = Good
  • Less than 1000 results = Great

Organizing Your Keyword in Order of Priority

With your list of keywords, you now want to figure out which ones are going to be designated to your presales pages and which ones will be best for regular post content.

For your presales content you want to select the words that…

  • 1. Have the best traffic potential: Your presales pages will be linked to from every page on your blog and therefore will be easier to rank for in the search engines. These are the pages you want to focus high traffic potential to.
  • 2. Are directly related to the product or service you are promoting: Do not select a keyword just based on traffic, the word also needs to relate directly to the product or service. For example if your best keyword is “Red Race Cars” and if the product or service is about “Blue Race Cars”, that might confuse the visitor.

Note: You need to balance this with competition as well. For example if you have a word that has a traffic potential of 100 visitors a day and a competition of 8000 versus one that gets 90 visitors and has a competition of 3000… we would take the little bit less traffic phrase since it will be easier to rank for.

– The End!

Well, that is it for the “Keyword Research” series… we hope you enjoyed it and got some good training from it. As always we appreciate any and all feedback or questions!

Review: Kitt-In Box

June 24th, 2008 by Matt Cutts

(In the webmaster chat last week, someone asked about my cats, so I thought I’d throw out a cat post.)

A little while ago someone mentioned the Kitt-In Box. It’s like an inbox for your desk, except that it holds cats. My cat Emmy likes to hang out in box-like objects, e.g.

Emmy likes boxes

So I decided to try this Kit-InBox thingie. Lo and behold, she loves it! Here she is giving it a good workout:

The Kitten inbox!

Now I get to type without Emmy perching on me as much, and she gets to stay nearby. Every cat is different, but if your cat likes small spaces and boxes too, I’d say to give the kitty inbox a try.

Now is your chance with the latest Contest and this one is way less intense then the COWpetition that ended last week.

You may have noticed that over the past few weeks there were a whole bunch of bloggers promoting a contest that was sponsored by MarketLeverage and we were approached about this as well.

The problem was to have the exact same contest on our blog as everyone else is, well, not really all that special or exciting. So as much as we love MarketLeverage, we had to politely decline their offer.

That lasted only about 10 minutes because they quickly replied with an email mentioning giving away a brand new iPhone 3G instead.

We thought long and hard on this (about 0.00001 seconds) and said YES!!!

So here is the dealio… if you want to get your hoofs on one of the these incredibly cool iPhones, then here is what you need to do…

Random Blog News… Contest, Content and… uhmm… OK we got nothing else

June 23rd, 2008 by John Cow

Item 1 –> As mentioned last week, tomorrow we will be announcing a new COWtest here at the Johncow pasture and this one is a little less intense (heck it is way less intense) then the COWpetition. The prize is a brand spanking new iPhone… plus we will probably through in a couple extra things too. We will give all the details for that tomorrow but we thought that we would also take this opportunity to share with you a great post from Contest Blogger called…

How to Avoid Getting Cheated in a Blog Contest

This is a pretty relevant post with all that is going on with contests as of late and it never ceases to amaze us how many scum bags there are out there and that we even have to consider this issue… but the world is full of selfish idiots (could have used much more colorful words but decided againt it ). If you know of a blog that is holding a contest that looks suspicious, please tell us about it.

Item #2 –> There is a contest over at http://www.kushmoney.com/2008/06/01/june-competition/ that is coming to a close very soon. This is not a big item contest but it is a legit one and if you use entrecard, they are giving way 10000 ec credits plus some advertising.

Item 3 –> The auction of GamerzReviewz over at sitepoint is going ok… we approved a bid of $700 and have a few pm’s asking for a buy now price. The contest is to have the site up for 30 days but to be honest we would love to just be done with it. We love the site and would rather keep it but on the other hand it is frustrating to keep it and manage it when you know you are selling it… which leads us to a thought that just came to us.

Right now our blog is at $700 and Garry’s is at $255…. would it be wrong if we pulled it out to keep it for ourselves and just donated $1000 (which is $300 more then the current bid) to World Vision?

As readers of this blog please let us know your thoughts on that… we do not want to put one more thought into it until we hear your thoughts.

PS –> We promise we will finish the keyword research series this week and we should have the cowpetition and keyword research material all put into a PDF for everyone who subscribed to our rss feed via email. If you are not subscribed then do it!

FireFox 3 Download Day - a Cow Ponders

June 21st, 2008 by John Cow

Well we know this has been talked about by others already, but it is Saturday and even though our post yesterday was not a “make money online” kind of thing, we are still a little burnt out over the long training posts of the COWpetition. Now do not worry and think things are going to slack off around here.. far from it… but we are taking a wee bit of a break. We need to let the grass in the pasture grow back before we head back over there again (should be back by Monday).

We actually wrote this post in bits and pieces over the past week and thought it would make a good Saturday read, so here goes…

June 17th has come and gone (in case you have not noticed… yes we are Captain Obvious). It was a highly anticipated day in browsing history (ohh that makes it sound so important… but only us internet geeks really cared about it ) because it was the release day of FireFox 3!

It seems lots of Firefox user’s are pretty stoked about the new release of Firefox 3 and the reasons being that Mozilla has been working for the past 34 months on making a new more secure, easier to use browser, which won’t use up as much memory as the older version. In fact, there are so many new feature’s with Firefox 3, Mozilla made a nice webpage for them.

So from what we understood and assumed, Firefox 3 would be ready for downloading as soon as we we’re ready to go on the 17th, well not so much.

We checked it out when we first got into the office, just for cow patties and giggles and we still had to ‘pledge’ that we would download it. See, Mozilla wants to make Guinness Book of Records for the most amount of software downloads in 24 hours.

So we left it for the rest of the morning, and then ended up going for lunch. Well we got back to the office and found out that Firefox 3 was suppose to be released by 1pm. Well we took a look at our clocks and it was 1:52pm so we thought we were in luck.

We headed on over to Mozilla’s webpage, only for it to be ‘down’. Then we found out that Mozilla’s server’s crashed before the official launch was to happen.

See, we personally don’t care about things like that. When something that’s highly anticipated by users all over the world, we know that these things are going to happen.

Now we are unsure if there is any sort of record that Mozilla has to compete with to make it into Guiness Book of Records, however from what we understand they have around 2 million people already pledging that they will download their newest browser. And those are just the people who pledged….so we will wait and see.

Update 1

As of 3:55pm on June 17th 2008, we officially downloaded FireFox 3. It’s apparently going to take around 12-15 minutes, but with the way their server’s have been acting, it’s not all surprising.

So now we are just patiently waiting for the download to finish so we can install the new browser and take it out for a test drive.

Update 2

So it’s now 4:13pm and we’ve finally installed FireFox 3 and it’s up and running. So far so good, we haven’t run into any type’s of problems or anything and the new changes look-wise of the browser are quiet nice.

Well actually the only thing we noticed that happened, was our Google Reader wasn’t compatible with the new version of Firefox, so we surfed on over to Mozilla.com and searched for it again, sure enough there it was on the front page and available for our version of Firefox. We installed it quickly and it’s working like a charm.

Our bookmark’s are still all there, hmmm, we seem to remember problems with bookmark’s not copying over into a new browser almost two years ago *Cough* IE7 *Cough*

We’re playing around with the new browser now and noticing some differences, especially in the history when you pull up your drop down menu. Not only does it have the link like it use too, but each website has it’s own little section and to be honest, we’re not quiet sure how we feel about it.

However one cool thing we did notice is that if you look in the upper right hand corner of the picture above, you’ll notice a star that’s actally in White, next to the RSS Feeder. Well if you look on the bottom right hand corner of the photo that’s above, you’ll notice the same star, but it’s gold.

If you are ever on a website that you want to quickly add to your favorite’s, just simply click on the WHITE star in the upper right hand corner and it will add it to your “Recently Bookmarked” Folder.

It’s all about making things simple and easy. Well so far from what we can see we are totally enjoying the new Firefox 3.

Update 3

Looks like over 8 000 000 downloads of Firefox 3 in 24 hours (Click Here to read the story)… Congrats Mozilla!

We’ll keep our eye’s on it for the next few day’s and see what else we can come across.

Until then, who of you are part of that 8 000 000 and care to share your thoughts on it at all?

If you have not downloaded the latest FireFox, get it at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Google webmaster chat: tons of fun!

June 20th, 2008 by Matt Cutts

By the way, we had our second webmaster live chat yesterday. I think almost everyone had a good time. It was free for anyone to dial in, and hundreds of people showed up. Thanks to the Google presenters and everyone that asked questions or talked in the chat. I got a chance to answer lots of questions in the written Q&A, and then after the official presentations were over we did a “lightning round” and answered a bunch more questions via audio for 20-25 minutes.

I think we’ll try to get an official recording up soon with answers from the Q&A, but Barry Schwartz has been working hard the last couple days. He was smart and recorded the chat audio as an MP3. He also copy/pasted a raw dump of the Q&A. You can hear/read both over on his post.

If we get a cleaned up version of the Q&A where we have a chance to correct any typos or similar stuff, I’ll add a pointer here. In the mean time though, there’s a huge amount of good information in the Q&A section. It was wild because we had maybe 15 people in one room in Mountain View (and more in Kirkland and Zurich), and a bunch of Googlers were just answering questions as fast as they could.

I thought the chat went really well, so I’ll probably press for us to continue this tradition. ) In the mean time, lots of people have been talking in Google’s webmaster discussion group.
