The History Of WordPress - You Wanted it and So You Got it

August 31st, 2008 by John Cow

After posting the ‘History of Blogging’ a month ago there were a few of you that asked about the ‘History of WordPress’, well here it is for you )

Lets take a trip back into 2001…. ah 2001, some good times but one especially tragic time.

  • January 15th 2001 – Wikipedia was founded.
  • July 2nd 2001 – The first self contained artificial heart was implanted into Robert Tools.
  • Sept 11th 2001 - Word Trade Center Tragedy
  • October 23rd 2001 – Apple released the iPod.
  • October 25th 2001 – Microsoft releases XP.

What also happened in 2001 is that b2 announced that it would no longer continue, so what happens next? Easy, Matt Mullenweg step’s into the picture. Since Matt used this software as his primary blogging software and it was announced that it would no longer continue, he decided that he would create folk software using the b2 codebase in 2003.

Soon Mike Little was contacted and together they would begin to develop a more modern style of software that would be up to date with web standards as well as Matt’s needs. It didn’t take long after that for both Matt and Mike to be joined by the original developer of b2 software, Michel Valdrighi.

Next comes the moment of truth, May 27th 2003. What happened on this day was the first release of WordPress 0.7. This version was XHTML 1.1 complaint and it had new default templates as well as a new admin interface.

Give the trio a little more time and on June 9th 2003, WordPress 0.71 was released. This release provided users with major updates for bug and security fixes as well as a speed-up performance of 300%. (That’s a lot of speed!) Also with this release users we’re introduced to the post status of ‘Publish, Draft and Private” and an even cleaner admin panel. It wasn’t long after the release of 0.71 came the release of 0.7.1.1 to fix a small bug.

  • June 9th 2003 – The New Jersey Devil’s beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to win their 3rd Stanley Cup Championship. The final score was 3-0. (Um, We think they DESTROYED them)

Are we all familiar with WordPress Codex? Well back on December 19th of 2003 we didn’t know it was WordPress Codex. We knew it as WordPress Wiki and it launched on this day and held all of the documentation for WordPress.

The next version of WordPress that graced our computers was known as 1.0. Also with this release came a large upgrade from the previous versions. What users we’re now seeing were: Edit link on posts and comments and there was another new admin interface. This happened on January 3rd 2004.

  • January 3rd 2004 – Flash Airlines Flight 604 crashes off of the coast of Egypt into the Red Sea killing all 148 aboard.

On January 25th 2004 the next version of WordPress 1.0.1 was released only weeks after the last. Why? Well this version helped to fix bugs, speed and some other miscellaneous features.

Users would then see the latest version of WordPress which included cosmetic fixes as well as move able type import improvements. This version was 1.0.2 and was released on March 14th 2004.

  • March 14th 2004 – Two Suicide Bombers kill 11 Israeli civilians in Ashdod, Israel.
  • March 14th 2004 – Jose Maria Aznar was defeated by Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in the Spanish Legislative Election.
  • March 14th 2004 – Vladmimir Putin wins a second term in the Russian Presidential Election.

Again just a few weeks later another release would happen. This time however there we’re massive changes. These changes included: Post Preview, New Plugin Architecture plus comment moderation system that was more advanced. This all happened on May 22nd of 2004 and the new version of WordPress was known as 1.2.

However on October 6th 2004 the new version 1.2.1 was then released to help fix some bugs and some minor security issues.

So let’s wait a few months here until December 15th 2004 which showed us the release of 1.2.2. This release helped with login issues, a security fix as well as some email encoding issues.

  • December 15th 2004 – Albanian terrorists take a bus as well as its passenger’s hostage and demand 1 million Euros in ransom money. This happened in Athens Greece.

Again let’s skip ahead a couple of months, shall we? Let’s go to February 2005. What we get here is user 1.5 and this version is going to provide us with vital features. Vital features you ask? What kind of vital features? Well these features included: managing static page, new template/theme system, plus WordPress is also equipped with a new default template.

  • February 15th 2005 – YouTube goes online!
  • February 16th 2005 – The NHL cancels their entire 2004-2005 season, thus becoming the first North American professional league to cancel a full season due to labor disputes.

Let’s go all the way to December of 2005 now and take a quick look at WordPress 2.0. What users received in this version was rich editing, better admin tools, faster posting, image uploading, a completely overhauled back end and an improved import system.

  • December 16th 2008 – The 43rd Mersenne Prime is found: 230,402,457 this was discovered by Dr. Curtis Cooper and Dr. Steven Boone. Both we’re professors at the Central Missouri State University.
  • December 31st 2005 – Another second has been added: 23:59:60, called a leap second, to end 2005. The last time that this happened was June 30th 1998.

Next on our list we are going to January 22nd 2007 when the next major upgrade happens, now we are looking at WordPress 2.1. This version featured: redesigned interface as well as enhanced editing tools. By enhanced we mean spell check and auto save. Plus users would see a variety of code and database optimizations and improved content management options.

  • January 22nd 2007 – A bombing that occurs in a Baghdad market kills 88 people.

Let’s bump on ahead to May 16th 2007 where we are introduced to Version 2.2 which includes widget support for our templates, an updated Atom feed support as well as speed optimizations. Initially with the release of 2.2 users we’re suppose to see a revised taxonomy system for their categories as well as tags, however due to a proposed revision this feature was held back.

  • May 16th 2007 – Nicolas Sarkozy takes over Jacques Chirac to become President of the French Republic.

And to end off the year of 2007 let’s take a look at WordPress 2.3 which debuted on the 24th of September. Now users would receive their new taxonomy system for categories, as well as easy notification of their updates and other interface improvements. This version also fully supported Atom 1.0

  • September 24th 2008 – India wins the ICC Twenty20 World Cup by beating out Pakistan by 5 runs.
  • September 24th 2008 – Gordon Brown addresses delegates for the first time as the Prime Minister in Bournemouth at the Labor Party Conferences.

Now our Journey leads us into 2008 where we are first introduced to WordPress 2.5 on March 29th. Now the release of 2.4 was skipped so that 2.5 would contain two releases worth of new code. When users received this version they were introduced with a complete overhaul of the admin interface, plus, the WordPress website was redesigned to match this new style.

  • March 29th 2008 – Parliamentary and Presidential elections in Zimbabwe.

And now we have WordPress version 2.6 which was released on July 15th 2008. This new version contains a more powerful CMS plus a dozen or more incremental improvements to the features that we’re introduced in 2.5

  • July 15th 2008 – World Youth Day begins in Sydney Australia. Pope Benedict XVI appears at the event and the event ends five day’s later on July 20th 2008.

Are many of you familiar with all of the different code names for WordPress?

Let’s take a look at them, shall we?

  • WordPress 1.0.1 – A.K.A. Miles
  • WordPress 1.0.2 – A.K.A. Blakey
  • WordPress 1.2 – A.K.A. Mingus
  • WordPress 1.5 – A.K.A. Strayhorn
  • WordPress 2.0 – A.K.A. Duke
  • WordPress 2.0.5 – A.K.A. Ronan
  • WordPress 2.1 – A.K.A. Ella
  • WordPress 2.2 – A.K.A. Getz
  • WordPress 2.6 – A.K.A. Tyner

Ever wonder where all of these ‘code names’ come from? Well each major release was named after a famous jazz musician.

So there you have it. You asked for a history of WordPress and we gave you one. Hopefully you liked it.

Malaysia 51 Years Of Independence (31st August)

August 30th, 2008 by eL

From left to right (Prime Minister):

  • Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj (1957 - 1970) - Wikipedia
  • Tun Abdul Razak bin Haji Dato’ Hussein (1970 - 1976) Wikipedia
  • Tun Hussein Dato’ Onn (11976 - 1981) Wikipedia
  • Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (1981 - 2003) WIkipedia
  • Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi - (2003 - current) Wikipedia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHV220X7n3M

The voices calling for independence have long been heard. Unfortunately after Japanese surrender on 15 August 1945 after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, British colonialists came to the Malay Peninsular with the intention of turning it into a colony.

In the Malay Peninsular, the official power hand over from the Japanese to the British was sanctioned on 22 February 1946 in Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur. The British had introduced the Malayan Union that offers equal rights in terms of citizenship issues to all residents without considering race and loyalty to the country.

It was soon clear that Malayan Union brought forth deprivation and ostracizing the rights of the Malays and indigenous bumiputra as the original settlers of the country, as well as affecting the institution and functions of the Malay rulers. Thus the British’s initiation of the Malayan Union received great oppositions from the Malays as well as from the Council of Rulers. Datuk Onn gathered 200 Malay representatives from the Pan-Malayan Malay Congress on 1 – 4 March 1946 at the Sultan Sulaiman Club, Kuala Lumpur. A committee made of delegates such as Dato Onn Jaafar, Dato Panglima Bukit Gantang, Dato Nik Ahmad Kamil, Dato Hamzah Abdullah and En. Zainal Abidin (Za’ba) was created.

The congress soon agreed with the decision to form an organisation named United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) or Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Bersatu (PEKEMBAR) which will be presented in the future congress. In the 3rd Pan-Malayan Malay Congress held in Johor Bharu, Dato’ Onn Jaafar soon announced the formation of UMNO on 11 May 1946. The purpose of the formation is to path the way for Malaya’s independence and sovereignty, to develop and preserve the rights of the Malays and Malayans, to safeguard and defend the religion and traditions of the Malays as well as the position of the sovereignty of the Malay rulers.

Their opposition succeeded in altering the Malayan Union to the Federal Agreement which was signed by the appointed Malay rulers on 21 January 1948 in returning the Malaya Peninsular to the Malays; the sovereignty of the rulers, preserved rights of the Malays as well as citizenship. The struggle of the Malays succeeded in forming the Federation of Malaya which consisted of 9 Malay states which are Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Perlis, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, and the Straits Settlements of Pulau Pinang and Malacca. It is lead by a British High Commissioner who has executive power and is assisted and advised by the Majlis Mesyuarat Kerja Persekutuan and the Majlis Mesyuarat Undangan Persekutuan.

The position of the Council of Rulers was given a better status including acting out the duty of advising the High Commissioner regarding the underlying principles of the Federation of Malaya. The position of Resident was replaced by a Menteri Besar. While the prerequisites for citizenship was tightened through enforced laws and neutralized through application.

A step is closer for the Malays to move forward in full unity to achieve independence for Malaya. UMNO was guided by many great leaders such as Datuk Onn Jaafar, Tun Abdul Razak, Ghaffar Baba, Dr. Ismail, Aziz Ishak, Sardon Jubir and others who path the way towards independence. The election of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra in taking after Dato’ Onn Jaafar who has resigned as the Yang Dipertua of Umno on 26 August 1951 clearly lead to a new era for the fight for independence.

The struggle of the Malays which had begun for a century since the fall of the Malacca Sultanate saw the Malay people and the state monarchs or local leaders relentlessly trying to restore the dignity of their race and country.  Their oppositions first began in guerrilla warfare which were instigated by former members of the Malacca Sultanate (1511) and Johor Sultanate, Raja Haji (1782), Dol Said (1831), Datuk Maharaja Lela, Datuk Sagor (1875), Datuk Bahaman, Mat Kilau (1891), Tok Janggut (1914), Haji Abdul Rahman Limbong (1928), Datu Mat Salleh (1894), Sharif Mashahor (1860), Rentap (1853) and others.

Another form of resistance by the Malays in the pursuit of independence in the early 1900s were initiated by religious groups such as Syed Syeikh al-Hadi, Syeikh Tahir Jalaluddin, Hizbul Muslimin movement, Gunung Semanggol religious centre, followed by Syeikh Abdullah Fahim, a religious teacher in Kepala Batas in the 1930s as well as Malay teachers particularly from Sultan Idris Training College.

The struggle that follows took a new form through the pen and ink. Who comprises of Malay novelists, story writers, poets and reporters particularly from Utusan Melayu that gave much exposure regarding the fight for freedom from colonialists. Among its pioneers were Zainal Abidin Ahmad (Za’ba), A. Rahim Kajai, Ibrahim Yaakob, Ishak Haji Mohamad, Ahmad Boestamam, Usman Awang, Shahnon Ahmad and many more with some becoming fugitives from the British as well as thrown in jail. Indeed when we track over the roots of the fight for independence, it is apparent that it was path with sweat, blood and tears.

Start a Blog About Something You Want to Kick Ass At!

August 27th, 2008 by John Cow

  • Is there a hobby that you want to get into?
  • Is there something you want to become great at?
  • Is there a goal you want to achieve?

Then why not start a blog about it?

You have heard me mention many times that it is easiest to write about something you are passionate about… but that does not mean you have to be an expert at it. What it does mean is you need to have the drive that enables you to research out relevant and worthwhile information for your readers and one of the great things about owning a blog is it forces you to stay up to date on current news in that industry, you need to understand the latest technologies, it makes you accountable to others (your readers) and…

THIS IS THE BEST PART

…the supplies, equipment and training can most likely be TAX FREE!

Blogging about Hobbies

Say you would love to take up woodworking as a hobby… well then why not start a blog about it? This will give you the drive to research out the information and because you will need to get certain tools and equipment in order to understand the hobby and write about it and because this is for your online business, it most likely can be a business expense.

So not only does having the blog encourage you to learn the art of woodworking, it also will help you save a lot of money on the supplies, equipment and training.

How Does it Save You a Lot of Money?

Say a woodworking course costs $700, then the average person would have to earn at least $1000, pay the tax man 30% (could be more or less depending on your current situation) and then you will hopefully have enough money left over for the course BUT if it is a business expense you can pay it directly from your business account and save the $300 in income tax!

Blogging About Travel

Do you love to travel?

Why not start a blog about traveling and you can post about your experiences with different airlines, different rental car companies, different hotels, booking through different online booking services, tourist attractions and of course destinations. You can blog about the planning steps and the experience while it is happening and so on and again… IT CAN BE A BUSINESS EXPENSE!

That means you can pay for the tickets, hotels and even luggage from your business account. Heck you will need to take pictures on your vacations for the blog and so your business will also need to provide you with a  camera and a laptop )

Blogging About a Goal You Want to Achieve?

Say you want to get out of debt, lose weight, run a 10k marathon, raise money for a special cause or become a professional MMA fighter (MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts)… why not blog about your journey to achieve that goal. What a great incentive to cause you to focus on that goal daily… you will always have it in front of you and you will also have readers that will not only help keep you accountable to your goal but will also encourage you to achieving your goal and again any supplies, equipment or training you need can be a business expense )

So What Can You Start a Blog About?

Karate, diet, book reviews, model cars, painting, weight lifting, home renovations, investing in real estate, scrapbooking, playing guitar, video games, restaurant reviews, restoring cars, hockey, movies, becoming a better golfer, TV shows, camping and the list can go on and on!

So, what would you like to blog about and what comments do you have about this post?

DISCLAIMER –> I am not a lawyer, accountant or tax professional. I am giving you my view point on this topic only and you NEED to discuss this with a tax professional to ensure you are doing everything according to your specific tax requirements.

My favorite books of 2008 (so far)

August 27th, 2008 by Matt Cutts

Okay, so we’re more than halfway through 2008. I’m a voracious reader, and I wanted to share my favorite books that I read in the first half of 2008.

1. American Shaolin. Matthew Polly grew up in Kansas and decided to go study martial arts in China with Shaolin monks. I dare you to read the first chapter and then try to stop reading. Polly sets up a hook -- the beginning of a fight in which he is over-matched -- that is irresistible. Whether you want to learn more about Chinese culture or kickboxing, I think anyone would enjoy this book. Polly’s book is rewarding and genuine.

2. Little Brother. Cory Doctorow has written a book that is both thrilling and (gasp) educational. The story revolves around a inchoate hacker named Marcus who is wrongfully imprisoned and humiliated in the aftermath of a terrorist attack. Marcus’ experience crystallizes his opposition to the overreaching security measures in the post-attack hysteria, and Marcus dedicates himself to exposing the flaws of the brave new world in which he finds himself.

Let me add a detour about books that educate: I’ve always wished that more fiction authors would slip in just a few tidbits to teach readers. Usually such attempts miss their mark, either because the education feels just a little too heavy-handed (e.g. Hackerteen), or the material is too easy. For example, Kaplan started a line of comic books with SAT vocabulary, but the words are stuff like roster and barricade. Sorry, not hard enough. Give me meretricious and quotidian and calumny and inchoate, but not roster.

I love that Little Brother is able to throw some education into the mix of entertainment and adrenalin. A friend of mine is reading it and remarked that it made her want to learn more about cryptography. I have to think that those little epiphanies are exactly what Doctorow is trying to achieve with his book. The book ends with an afterword by Bruce Schneier, a well-known security researcher. In his afterword, Schneier discusses what a “security mindset” is and why it’s important. Schneier has written a very good article online about the “security mindset,” and I encourage everyone to read it.

In the past, I’ve been on the fence about Cory Doctorow’s writing. I enjoyed Down and Out In the Magic Kingdom for its description of “whuffie” (think of whuffie as a reputation measure like PageRank, but it exists along a richer number of dimensions instead of as a single number). But Eastern Standard Time didn’t grab me enough for me to finish it.

In Little Brother, Doctorow’s writing is crisp and sure. I read William Gibson’s Spook Country at the same time, and it really felt like Gibson has passed the torch to Doctorow. Spook Country built to a satisfying conclusion, but deliberately embraced the technology of the past few years. In Little Brother, Doctorow skips forward into a paranoid future just a little bit, and the result feels ripped from next year’s headlines.

So: I think you’ll like Little Brother and I think you’ll learn at least a couple neat ideas from it as well. Little Brother is not just an enjoyable book; it’s an important book.

3. How to Rig an Election. This is a book by Allen Raymond tells a political operative’s experience with trying various tricks to affect elections. At one point, he veers into the blackhat arena by effectively mounting a denial-of-service attack against the competing campaign’s phone bank on Election Day. The blackhat experiment ends very badly (along with the competing campaign, the phone lines also belonged to some firefighters) and the author spent time in jail.

How to Rig an Election is compelling to me for a couple reasons. First, it will appeal to anyone who is interested in security or how to make a process (whether it be search or elections) robust against cheating. Second, this book has an amazingly raw and honest voice. From the tone of this book, you can tell the author has burned all his bridges and contacts to the ground and never expects to work in politics again. How to Rig an Election is a breath of fresh air, even as it makes you think about what things might be going on during other elections.

What books have you enjoyed so far in 2008?

I’d be curious to hear what you liked or disliked.
