My Cats Monthly Expenses

July 3rd, 2008 by eL

It has been a while since my last update on my beloved cats D Oh well, like every month, I will always go shopping for them. Yes! Indoor cats need food and accessories. Different cat owner will have different budget, it is all depends on how many cats and kittens you have. Since last 4 months I started to buy kitten food again. I have kittens now. So then, I’m buying both adult and kitten food. Here what I bought for July 2008.

My adult cats - breakfast, lunch and dinner with Blackwood Cat Food now. The big white pack you saw in the picture is Blackwood. It’s 24KG. I’m sharing this with my housemate. Cost RM220 for 24KG, so 12KG each = RM110. My adult cats ate about 10kg per month. So this month, they have extra

Since last 4 months I have a new born kittens, so I feed them with Royal Canin Kitten 36. Previous 3 months I feed them with IAMS kitten. But out of the blue, I saw Royal Canin Kitten 36 cost RM151 for 10KG. Almost the same price with IAMS Kitten (RM132 for 9kg), so I’m adding RM19 for 1 more KG, why not?

Now the important one, litter sand. Since I have many cats and kittens, I need cheap but good litter sand. I’m using Fussie Cat for like 6 months. I’m happy with the quality and price. The sand smells lemon! It cost RM20 per pack of 10L. In one month, I need at least 4 to 5 packs.

Then I brought 2 of my kittens for vaccination, bought Hi-Vita Vitamin Supplement, and Ilium Oticlean (for cleaning their ears),  cost about RM80. P

At the end of the day, my cats spend about RM430 ($132) this month. Some cat lovers freak out with that amount of spending just for cats every month. But boys and girls, there are some other spend more than me!

Anyway, I love my cats and kittens. They are part of the family. So why not?

p/s will update some pictures soon

Google Filters, Do You Know What They Are?

July 3rd, 2008 by John Cow

Google search has certain commands that you can include with your search query, which allow you to “filter” their search engine results, which can help you get somewhat of a better idea of areas you might want to improve upon to help your blog rank better.

These of course are not 100% perfect but the information they do tell you is directly from Google and it is very worthwhile in our opinion.

These filters are…

  • allintitle:”keyword phrase”
  • allinanchor:”keyword phrase”
  • allintext:”keyword phrase”
  • allinurl:”keyword phrase”

IMPORTANT –> Do NOT copy and paste the filters from this page… the quotes are “smart quotes” because of the WordPress blog editor and will not give you the right results if you paste them as is into Google. Make sure the quotes are “like this”.

Here is how each one works and how you can use them to your advantage.

1. allintitle:”keyword phrase”

This filter allows you to determine where your blog ranks in Google’s results compared to the other blogs and sites that have the keyword in the title of the page. The title is <title></title> in the source code of the page.

Why is this important?

If your blog was ranked 10th in Google for the keyword but 4th for the “allintitle”, you would know that overall your title was good in Google’s eyes and there are other reasons your blog might not be ranking higher than 10th.

If however your blog was ranked 10th in Google but nowhere to be found for the allintitle, then you would know that your title needs definite improvement. You would then look at the top results and compare your title to theirs, watching for keyword density.

IMPORTANT –> You want your title to draw the attention of the visitor… not just the search engine. Try to make your title around 8 to 10 words with the keyword in the beginning. Only mention the keyword phrase one and make sure you treat the title like the headline of a classified ad.

2. allinanchor:”keyword phrase”

This filter allows you to determine where your blog ranks compared to the other sites and blogs in Googles results, which are using that keyword phrase in their incoming links anchor text.

Why is this important?

If your site was ranked 10th in Google for the keyword but 4th for the “allinanchor”, you would know that overall your keyword link popularity for that term is good. That means that out of all Google’s results, in regards to people linking to you with that keyword in the anchor text, Google thinks your blog is doing well.

If however, your blog was ranked 10th in Google but nowhere to be found for the allinanchor, then you would know that you need to pick up your sites link building campaign focused on that exact keyword phrase.

3. allintext:”keyword phrase”

This filter allows you to see where your blog ranks in Google’s eyes compared to the other blogs and sites in their index that have this keyword in their body text.

Why is this important?

If your site was ranked 10th in Google for the keyword but 4th for the “allintext”, you would know that overall your keyword percentage or frequency for that term was good in Googles eyes.

If your site was ranked 10th in Google but nowhere to be found for the “allintext”, then you would know that you need to fix your keyword density (frequency). The best thing to do here is analyze the top 5 results of the “allintext” and try to match thier density.

4. allinurl:”keyword phrase”

This filter allows you to determine where your blog ranks in Google’s eyes compared to the other blogs and sites in their index that have this keyword in the URL. Obviously there is not a lot that can be tweaked here and this test shows that the domain is important but the full file name is almost as important. Sometimes the page file name with a dashed keyword (such as www.domain.com/keyword-here.html) will rank better then a domain with the keyword directly on it (www.keyword.com).

Why is this important?

If your site was ranked 10th in Google for the keyword but 4th for the “allinurl”, you would know that overall your url and / or file name for that term was good.

If your site was ranked 10th in Google but nowhere to be found for the “allinurl”, then you may want to just leave it (bet you did not expect us to say that ) . You could of course set up a 301 redirect with a better file name but in all honesty just try hard to get the keyword in the domain file name right away and you will be ok.

Note: If you test this you will see that Google seems to like the dashes in the file names. So if your keyword is “GPS Tracking Device” and if this page you are checking is not the index page you should make the page file name…

Hope you found this post useful… let me know your thoughts and if there are other Google tricks that you like to use.

How to stop junk mail

July 2nd, 2008 by Matt Cutts

I’ve been learning how to stop receiving junk mail, and I thought I’d share what I’ve learned.

Reducing Junk Mail

There are several services that will help you reduce your junk mail:

- GreenDimes offers a free basic service, but I decided to do their $20 one-time fee because it offered a few extra things I wanted. GreenDimes walks you through some easy steps that will reduce unsolicited mail, and also lets you decline catalogs. Each time you receive an unwanted catalog, you go to GreenDimes and type the name of the catalog in. GreenDimes takes care of removing you from that catalog’s mailing list. I’ve been quite happy with this service, especially since it’s a one-time fee.

- ProQuo is a free junk-mail reduction service. In the future, they intend to make money when consumers opt-in to request offers; ProQuo will make money from those advertisers. I tried this service today. It lets you stop many services with just a couple mouse clicks per service, but for about 50% of the marketers (maybe 10-15 of them) you have to print and send a letter or leave to an external website to complete a form. It’s still better than nothing though, because even if you’re lazy you can opt out of a lot of junk mail with just your mouse for free. Overall, the service is free, easy, and helps you opt out of a wide variety of lists.

- Catalog Choice is a site solely for opting out of catalogs. It doesn’t tackle things like credit card offers, PennySaver, or list brokers, but the site is clean with a really nice user interface. One of the founders, Daniel Katz, has been interviewed by Bill Moyers, so I trust that they’re a legit organization, even though their WHOIS information is private and there’s very little information about the group on their site. It sounds like three different environmental groups formed Catalog Choice as a non-profit. One piece of advice for Catalog Choice: please give a little more information about yourselves (e.g. history, founders, press) so that people can easily see that you’re legitimate.

- 41pounds.org charges $41 for five years of service. The name comes from the fact that they claim to block 41 pounds of junk mail per year for you. I haven’t tried this service.

Contacting services directly

- You can visit the webpage of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) to opt-out online so that you don’t receive mail from companies that use DMA lists. The pretty url http://www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglist takes you to the url https://www.dmachoice.org/MPS/proto1.php where you want to select option #3 (”Remove your name from DMA Member Prospect Lists”). You will have to provide a valid credit card number, but your credit card will not be charged.

- You can opt out of ADVO online.

Other options

- While you’re at it, why not place yourself on the “Do not call” list at www.donotcall.gov to prevent most telemarketers from calling you? All you need to give is your phone number and an email address, and you will be permanently opted out. Read more about the do-not-call list if you’re interested.

All these actions won’t eliminate junk mail completely, but it will prevent a lot of the junk from showing up in your mailbox. These aren’t affiliate links, just stuff that I think people will find handy. Good luck!

Protect yourself: get a free credit report

July 1st, 2008 by Matt Cutts

I wanted to write down 3-4 easy steps to protect yourself from identity theft and help you check your free annual credit reports.

Credit check options

- If you haven’t checked your credit in the last year, visit the official site that lets you get a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus. The site is annualcreditreport.com and you’ll have to be on the lookout for upsells like “Find out your credit score for $5.95″ or “Sign up for a credit monitoring service.” But this option is a safe and free way to get access to your credit report from Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax.

- Suppose you don’t want credit card companies sending you offers by snail mail. After all, a thief could steal the offer from your mailbox and use it to open a credit card in your name. Again, there’s a free, official service from the three major credit bureaus to stop getting “free credit cards” offer by postal mail. The site is www.optoutprescreen.com. You can opt-out online for five years, or print out and mail a piece of paper to do a permanent opt-out.

- If you had any type of open credit account between 1987 and May 28, 2008 (which is probably most adults in the United States), you can receive nine months of free credit monitoring. TransUnion, one of the big three credit unions, is settling a class action lawsuit and provides this monitoring for free if you sign up before September 24, 2008. The official site is www.listclassaction.com and you can choose from several options. I chose the nine month credit monitoring service.

If you think you might have been a victim of identity theft or are at higher risk for identity theft (e.g. someone stole a laptop that might have had personal information on it), you have a couple options. A fraud alert requests that before a new lender opens up an account, they take extra steps to verify your identity like calling you on the phone. It should be free if you call the credit bureaus, but it only lasts for 90 days, so you would need to renew the fraud alert every three months.

Meanwhile, a credit freeze is just what it sounds like. It freezes your credit record completely, so that identity thieves should not be able to open new credit accounts in your name. A credit freeze costs $10 per credit bureau each time you want to freeze or un-freeze your credit record.

I used the first three websites earlier to get my free credit report, opt out of getting more credit card offers, and sign up to for a credit monitoring service. Again, all of these are free or official sites; I don’t get any money for recommending them. )

Other options

If you’re feeling ambitious, you can also get a public records report on yourself to see what turns up. I believe you can get this report free once a year as well from ChoicePoint. You can get more information here but I believe the short answer is that you need to print, fill out, and mail this one-page form (PDF link). You need to include a photocopy of your driver’s license or other ID and a copy of a utility/phone/credit card bill — see the instructions for the form (PDF link) for more info.

Do you know of other ways to protect yourself from identity theft or otherwise monitor your credit record or score?

Suggest what webspam should work on next

July 1st, 2008 by Matt Cutts

Today is July 1st, which is a special day because it marks the beginning of the second half of the year. Just in the last day or so there have been a couple pieces of good news: better indexing of Flash, and we re-wrote our “What is an SEO?” guide to improve the tone, then asked for more suggestions on how to improve it.

July 1st is also a good time to sit down and ask the question “What do I want to accomplish during the rest of this year?” I’ve been talking to various people on my team about which projects to tackle next, and I wanted to ask for your feedback too.

In the comments, feel free to suggest projects that you think Google should work on next in webspam. I have a comment policy and I’ll reserve the right to prune comments that don’t contribute to the discussion. But if you have a constructive, polite suggestion then I’d be interested to hear it.

The one other thing I would ask is to please think about your suggestion before reading the other comments. If people read the other feedback first, the suggestions won’t be as independent.

Google gets better at Flash with Adobe’s help

July 1st, 2008 by Matt Cutts

If you haven’t seen the official posts, Adobe has been working to make Flash more index-able by search engines. Google has recently rolled out better code for Flash, e.g. you’re now more likely to see useful snippets on Flash pages in Google’s search results.

I’m a fan of this change, and I’m a fan of Adobe in general. They get a lot of credit in my book for opening up the specifications for PostScript, Adobe’s font standards, and their Acrobat/PDF format. Very few companies have been able to open up their specs and still compete successfully against powerful opponents. I respect Adobe for that — not to mention providing one of the first widely-known “plug-in” mechanisms (in Photoshop). The idea of a plugin or extension has greatly affected how people view software from Firefox to WordPress. I’m glad that this most recent change by Adobe will make it easier for search engines to index content in Flash files.
